Today was the dreaded Cattle Call for all performance and musical theater majors. They had to prepare an audition consisting of either two monologues or a monologue and a song that was 90 seconds in length. Sara and I sat in on two sessions of auditions it was nice to finally see people actually perform, and walk the talk they had been talking. To let you in on the experience of being an audition-er They had to check in at the end of the hallway that leads into the black box about 10-15 minutes prior to thier time. When the person before them goes they have to cross through a long large room separated into two sections by a moveable paint rack that moves from the scene shop into the basement. On one half is lighting storage and the pit which is also directly under the trapped stage. (trapped means that you can take out parts of the stage...trap door) On the other side is random furniture or large appliances that were used in prior productions...its kind of a prop grave yard except nicer. They walk through the prop grave yard and through a door leading into the black box which has seating on both side of the room then they go to the center of the stage introduce themselves to the faculty and perform. It must be slightly stressful because of the time constraints (a student will cut you off at exactly 90 seconds) and the cold formality not normally held between the staff and students. All of the students I watched did a great job all though a few were not properly clothed. The dress code is conservatively semi-formal; they want you to be
comfortable and able to move but also to look professional. Some girl came in sweats, flip-flops and a tank-top, okay for movement but so unbelievably inappropriate for the situation.
I am listening to Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" I love this song. Anyway the rest of the day was pretty chill I caught up with my blogging.
